How to Apply for a Student Visa in Australia

Up to 124 days prior to the commencement of your term, you may submit an application for an Australian student visa. Up to 90 days prior to the start of your studies, you are also permitted to travel to Australia.

According to the updated SSVF Guidelines, the application process for an Australian student visa is now totally online. The actions you must take are as follows:

  • You must first create and log into an ImmiAccount before starting an online application.
  • The application form for the visa subclass to which the applicant is entitled must be filled out. Education agents and Registered Migration Agents (RMAs) in India who are authorised to use the student online lodgement option may submit student eVisa applications on behalf of the applicant.
  • You will need to login into your ImmiAccount once more in order to track your application. Your account will allow you to track the progress of your application, submit documents, update passport information, change your email address, and more.
  • Each online application receives a Transaction Reference Number (TRN), which is a unique number. You can use this to verify your visa entitlements, determine when you need to contact the visa centre, and track and manage your application.

Australia Student Dependent Visa

You are allowed to bring family members with you if you are travelling to Australia to study. Once you start your studies in Australia, you can either apply for their visas then so they can join you, or you can add them to your initial student visa application. Spouses, partners, and unmarried minor children under the age of 18 are eligible for dependent visas.

If you requested a student visa in the past and listed dependent family members, you must fill out Form 157A with their details. The primary student visa holder must possess a valid visa that is good for at least a year, as well as sufficient funds and insurance to pay for all necessary expenses during that period.

Post-study Work Options for Students

Work is permitted for students with Subclass 500 visas up to 40 hours per week. Additionally, there are no restrictions on how many hours employees can work during breaks or holidays. But they can’t start working until the course starts. The restriction does not apply when casework is occasionally needed as part of the course. At the beginning of their PhD thesis or research project, students in the postgraduate research sector are permitted to work an unlimited amount of hours. Graduates of the Temporary track are eligible to apply for post-study work visas after completing their studies in Australia.
